THC Reading Series Presents Michael Penkas, Saturday, January 31 @ 7 PM

Happy New Year, everybody! Ready to crack the whip on 2015?

I’m sorry. I don’t even know what that means, exactly, but I couldn’t resist saying it.

Anyway, those who have attended our readings before will understand why I began this post that way. We’re starting the year by featuring one of our open mic regulars, who for months has been entertaining us with the adventures of his crime-solving dominatrix character, Mistress Bunny. Michael Penkas released a full-fledged Mistress Bunny novel, Mistress Bunny and the Cancelled Client, in November of last year. On January 31, we’ll be celebrating that by letting Mike have the floor as our featured reader.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. with Mike’s reading; an open mic will follow. As always, the event is free to attend, with food and drink available for purchase. And just in case you haven’t been here before, Tamale Hut Cafe is located at 8300 W. Cermak Road in North Riverside, Illinois.

A murder mystery being probed (ahem) by a dominatrix–what’s not to enjoy? See you on January 31!

Author’s Bio: Michael Penkas has worked as a librarian, a typesetter, a website editor and a ghostwriter. His short stories have appeared in Black Gate, Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, Shock Totem, Midnight Echo and One Buck Horror, among other places. A collection of his ghost stories, Dead Boys, was published in 2013. His first novel, Mistress Bunny and the Cancelled Client, was published in November 2014. A complete list of his published work can be found at michaelpenkas.com.

End of the Year + Chicago Book Expo 2014

Well, that’s it. Thanksgiving is done, Black Friday is just about over, and that’s all there is, right?

No, seriously, thank you for all of your support for and interest in the Tamale Hut Cafe Reading Series throughout 2014. It’s a cliche, sure, but it’s true: we couldn’t have done it without you. Well, I guess we could have, but it’s much less fun when it’s only, like, two or three of us sitting around Jaime’s restaurant and telling stories.

As mentioned in our last post, the Reading Series does take the month of December off, just to accommodate everyone’s holiday whirlwinds. Please save the date, however: we’ll be starting off the eighth year of this series on January 31, 2015, with the always interesting Michael Penkas as our featured reader. More details to come in the New Year!

Also, even though we won’t be holding a reading in December, we have registered for a table at the Chicago Book Expo 2014 on Saturday, December 6. A few of us will be there to promote the various writing events at Tamale Hut Cafe (the Reading Series, the Writers Group, and the Writing Contest). It’s free for all you book lovers out there, so come on out, enjoy some books, and say hi!

Oh, and happy holidays!
